What Happens at Your First Orthodontic Appointment?

Every one of us wants a perfect smile which can win everyone’s heart.  Not everyone gets everything in life and this certainly applies to crooked teeth also. Many people have teeth which are not evenly spread or crooked.  This flaw often disables a person from enchanting their smile with great happiness.  In such cases, orthodontic treatment can be quite helpful.

An orthodontist is a blessing to all of us, using their expertise to correct crooked teeth or misaligned jaws to near perfection in no time at all.

Who is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is the one who helps in rescaling of all your crooked teeth to the desired position with a perfect aligning of the jaws, providing an ease and comfort to your mouth.

Things which happen at the First Orthodontic Appointment

The top objective with orthodontic treatment is to provide you with a healthier and straighter smile.  The decision to use orthodontic treatment should be discussed with your family members. After you have committed to seeing an orthodontist, there are a number of items you can expect to address at your first orthodontic appointment:

1.     Set of regular photographs

The first step is for the orthodontist to take photographs of your current teeth. This important step allows the orthodontist to find out the difference between the original teeth and the desired teeth look after the treatment.

2.     X-ray

X-rays constitutes a basis of every treatment and the same goes with the orthodontic treatment too.  X-rays enable the orthodontist to visualize what’s going on underneath the gums.  Furthermore, the positioning of every tooth and the teeth below the gum lines are all recorded under X-rays.

3.     Impression of the teeth

In many cases, the orthodontist may take impressions (mold) of the teeth. This enables them to understand the problem clearly and what is the best solution to treat this problem. As part of this process, the patient is asked to bite down on some soft-puffy material for a few seconds. This will create a replica of the bite. Then, it is removed and the mold is made in the lab.

4.     Examination

After the above procedures are completed, the orthodontist analyzes all the images and records.  A complete examination is done, taking everything into consideration.  Specific questions will be asked by the orthodontist, such as whether the jaws make noise when the mouth is closing/opening or if there are any issues in swallowing and chewing.

5.     Discussing the treatment options

After the examination is completed, the orthodontist will typicall recommend treatment options.  Treatment might begin at the same moment or at a later time, depending on the severity of an issue.

Collectively, the comprehensive information allows the orthodontist to finalize a proper diagnosis plan for your orthodontic treatment.
